The three things Google weighs for the map pack, the profile fields that actually matter, and a review system that does not break the rules.
Google decides the map pack on three things. Distance you cannot change. Relevance and prominence you can.
Relevance is your categories, services, description and the words in your reviews. Prominence is reviews, activity, citations and links.
The primary category is the single strongest lever on a profile and the one most businesses get wrong: a barber listed under 'beauty salon' never appears for 'barber near me'. Pick the most specific category that describes what you do, then add secondary categories only where they genuinely apply.
Second most common error: the map pin. A pin dropped in the wrong building, or a service-area business with a country-wide area, quietly removes you from nearby searches.
Ask within an hour of delivering, while the person is still holding the result. Use a QR on the bill or bag and a short link on WhatsApp. Reply to every review inside a day.
Never buy reviews, never incentivise them, and never ask staff or friends who were not customers. Google filters clusters like that, and a removed review is a wasted ask plus a flag on the profile.
Post weekly, add photos monthly, keep hours accurate including holidays, and fill the services and products sections. Activity is a signal, and an abandoned profile loses to an active one with fewer reviews.
In the profile dashboard: searches that showed you, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Track the four monthly. If calls are flat while impressions rise, the problem is the photos and reviews, not the ranking.
